FAQs

Can I still do driving lessons during the coronavirus pandemic?

Our priority is for both your safety and that of our driving instructors, so given the current circumstances you should not be taking a driving course or lessons with an instructor, unless you are a key worker.

I want to learn to drive and need to pass fast. When could my course start?

At the moment dates cannot be confirmed. As there may be an influx of new bookings, once the test centres reopen, we suggest booking NOW we will then have your details to hand and we will book you in for the earliest available dates. You can book online or simply provide your details by completing this form; https://www.learndrive.co.uk/contact-us/

When will the driving test centres re open after lockdown?

Driving test centres now open from 22 July, however this will be a phased approach, starting with those that already had tests booked.

My theory test is due to expire soon. Will the DVSA extend the expiry period in light of the pandemic?

Unfortunately, the DVSA have announced that they will not extend expiry dates. If your theory test expires, you will need to take it again. This will apply even if you were due to take a practical test which was later cancelled as a result of COVID-19. We can arrange a course with theory test if required, although ideally we would recommend this is passed before booking. We do not feel it is fair that coronavirus is affecting driving lessons and test, we think the DVSA should extend theory expiry dates (especially if you already had a test booked)- maybe this may change.

I am a key worker. Can I still take my test?

Please get in contact with the DVSA if you work in any of the key sectors (those whose work is critical to the Covid-19 response). DVSA will check your eligibility, and may arrange for you to take an emergency test.

At the start of the application, you’’ll be asked a series of questions and will need to supply your ID, so we DVSA will all the information they need to confirm candidate eligibility. Applicants will then be matched with available volunteers for test slots at their nearest testing
centre.

Feeling stressed or anxious during the coronavirus?

Sadly the coronavirus is not only affecting driving lessons and test. Mental Health charities such as Young MindsMind and AnxietyUK offer a range of online resources and support guides for managing wellbeing. In addition to this these sites offer telephone or chat support. Details about getting urgent help and support for a mental health crisis can be found on the NHS Every Mind Matters site.

Temporary changes to the car and vocational driving test

From tomorrow (1 May 2020) DVSA is making a temporary change to car and vocational emergency driving tests, to help reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

What will change

Temporary changes to the car and vocational driving test
From tomorrow (1 May 2020) DVSA is making a temporary change to car and vocational emergency driving tests, to help reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

What will change
Our examiners will end emergency tests early if a candidates commits:

a serious or dangerous fault
a total of 16 driver faults
This is to help reduce the amount of time the candidate and examiner spend in the vehicle, when the candidate has failed their test.

In these circumstances, the examiner will instruct the candidate to drive back to the test centre instead of continuing for the full time, before they tell the candidate they have failed.

Motorcycle module 2 tests will not be affected by this change.

Updated standard operating procedure
We’ve updated our emergency driving test standard operating procedure to include these changes.
