As from today - 4 June 2018- learner drivers are now allowed to take lessons on the motorway.
Previously only those who have passed their test could do so, lessons are now allowed but only with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car. Great news as all our instructors are fully qualified, have dual-controls fitted and are experienced in providing motorway tuition. We believe having some tuition on the motorway will allay any concerns and fears about motorway driving and will greatly increase confidence when venturing on to the motorways as a new driver.
Blackpool is a great place to learn to drive and is perfectly located with a motorway (M55) right on our doorstep, during the day the motorway is not too busy so is ideal for learner drivers.
Road safety minister Jesse Norman said: "Britain's roads are among the safest in the world, but road collisions remain the second biggest killer of young people.
"Allowing learner drivers to have motorway lessons with a qualified road safety expert will help more young drivers to gain the skills and experience they need to drive safely on motorways."
Mark Winn, DVSA Deputy Chief Driving Examiner said: “DVSA’s priority is to help you through a lifetime of safe driving.
“Allowing learners to practice on motorways with a professional instructor gives them the opportunity be taught motorway rules and etiquette properly, practice at higher speeds and will help make our roads even safer.”
We at Learndive, along with other motoring organisations welcome the changes, especially as over a quarter of drivers say they felt scared when driving onto the motorway for the first time.
Motorways driving is not being added to the test and lessons are voluntary, we at Learndrive will only take pupils on to the motorway when we feel they are at a suitable standard and ready for test, the option to take up the motorway lessons will be up to the instructor and naturally only if the pupil wishes to do so.
